About Battle of The Toys and Designer Toys
Battle of The Toys was held at the end of Q3. Last year, it took place at a different location, but this year, they changed the venue to Balai Kartini, the same place where @jakartatoysfair hosted Jakarta Toys Fair back in March. I felt it served a similar purpose to Jakarta Toys Fair, focusing more on toy sales. The big names this year were Multi and Victory Toys. It’s actually great to have two major toy events in a year for Designer Toys.
How About Designer Toys?
After the IDATE event at Neo Soho, the slots for Battle of The Toys were announced. There were only four available slots, and many people who attended JICAF were more focused on that event, leaving fewer opportunities for others to join. I was placed on the waiting list, which gave artists who couldn’t attend the Neo Soho event a chance to participate. Fortunately, I was able to secure a spot along with Berniaz, Alin, and Shazam Arcadia—four grown men over 30, haha! But the event was a blast, showcasing many fantastic designer toys!
What Did I Bring?
For this event, I brought four Rangda figures, a few Coco, Bibi, and two new color variations of Nugget. The stock was limited, as I’ve never felt confident enough to bring too many pieces. At the same time, I was still finalizing pre-orders for Coco, with less than two months to go after the Neo Soho event.
This time, we were provided with a table and a rack—both of which were great, especially with the added lighting. Our IDS booth was positioned between two international artists: Machine56 and an artist from Hong Kong (sorry, I forgot his name). It was such an honor to meet my childhood idol, Yoga Machine56, and it felt amazing. Connecting with new people in the world of designer toys is always a positive experience, right?
Observations
There was something a bit different compared to the Jakarta Toys Fair. The number of booths seemed fewer this time. There was a large empty space in the middle of the venue, which felt a bit odd.
Oh, and I also had the chance to speak on stage alongside other toy makers to introduce our works! This experience made me realize that I need to start creating larger designer toys—mine looked pretty small compared to the others on display.
Sales Results
As with previous events, this one was held over two days. I managed to sell:
- 2 Rangda (one was pre-ordered by a friend, and the other sold on-site)
- 1 Coco
- 1 Bibi
- 2 keycaps
- 1 other toy
Overall, the results were quite good, giving me enough funds to prepare for the next event, IGX, in November.
Thanks for reading all the way through! See you in the next post!
